A newer home or new faucet does not automatically mean zero lead at the tap

Older plumbing can increase the number of potential lead sources, but age alone does not determine a result. Lead can come from service lines, solder, valves, brass components and fixtures along the water path.

Preparing the nest

A household water assessment can focus on the outlets and uses that matter most before baby arrives.

Sample the water actually used

Kitchen taps, refrigerator lines and selected filtered outlets can be tested when relevant to the family's concern.

Accredited laboratory analysis

Results provide measured information for the specific contaminants included in the testing scope.

Lead testing and building age

Lead in Water Testing for the Home You Are Preparing

Preparation for a child concentrates on the room. The supply plumbing serving that room is the household system a child meets every day, and it is the one nobody documents.

Olympian Water Testing provides professional lead in water testing for expectant parents, families, homeowners and property buyers throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

What the Plumbing History Indicates

Supply systems are altered in sections over decades, which leaves most properties with material from several eras connected in series. A recently renovated kitchen describes a short length of pipe rather than the whole path.

Where new material meets older material at a junction, the behaviour of that junction can influence release, which is why assessment before and after plumbing work is frequently informative.

Where Lead Enters

Contact with lead bearing material is the mechanism, whether that is the water service line, solder at pipe joints or brass along the supply path for the property concerned.

Modern systems carry lead in parts including angle stops and shutoff valves beneath sinks and behind appliances, backflow preventers and pressure reducing valves, faucet bodies in kitchens and bathrooms, hose bibbs and exterior spigots, tub and shower mixing valves, well pump and booster pump wetted components, brass pipe fittings including tees, elbows, couplings, unions and adapters. Lead free fixtures return measurable lead in analysis with sufficient frequency that age is not a useful filter.

How the Sampling Event Is Conducted

Our sampling technicians perform the site visit, walking the property to establish what is physically present before points are selected.

Lead is drawn as an ordered series along the supply path, stagnation is requested of the client where the parameter demands it, and outlet screens remain in place for the property concerned.

Understanding Our Reporting

Our reporting sets out each draw, the conditions logged at collection, the method applied, the reporting limit and the measured concentration.

The pattern across the sequence indicates whether a fixture, a branch line, a riser or the water service line is contributing. Olympian Water Testing has worked across this region since 1991 under NELAP accredited laboratory analysis for the property concerned.

Common questions

What should I test before bringing a newborn home?
The answer depends on the home and water source. Lead is often a priority in older plumbing, while well water may call for bacteria, nitrate, arsenic and other groundwater testing.
Can plumbing that has sat unused affect water quality?
Periods of low use can change water age and contact with plumbing materials. A property returning to normal occupancy may benefit from testing when there is a specific concern.
Does a whole-house filter mean every tap is protected equally?
That depends on where the system is installed, what it is designed to remove and the plumbing downstream. Testing selected outlets can verify the water after treatment.
Can a nursery sink or bottle-prep station be sampled directly?
Yes. Sampling the actual point of use can be useful when that is where water is routinely prepared for an infant.
